If running a home feels like guesswork
You don't need ten books. You need the foundations.
A cookbook here, an organizing manual there, something about gardening you've never opened. Most of us collect specialist guides and still feel like we're improvising — unsure how to stock a pantry properly, host without panic, or keep a home that stays calm. What's missing isn't more instructions. It's the underlying principles that make all of it make sense.

Five essentials of a well-kept life
Martha breaks each area down into clear, actionable steps — the principles she's refined over decades, in one volume:
- ✦Cooking — master the basics, cook seasonally, keep a well-stocked kitchen
- ✦Entertaining — host with elegance, from a dinner party to weekend guests
- ✦Home Organizing — her golden rules for a well-maintained, clutter-free home
- ✦Collecting — how to start, what to look for, how to treasure your finds
- ✦Gardening — soil, timing blooms, composting, growing vegetables and more
Beautiful enough to leave out
A reference you'll use — and a book you'll display
At nearly 10 inches and 288 richly photographed pages, this is a substantial, handsome volume. Readers describe reading it cover to cover like a novel, keeping it on the coffee table, and watching guests pick it up and thumb through. It's why it's such a natural gift — for a mother, a newlywed couple, or anyone setting up their first real home.
“Beautifully done and would make a lovely gift. Lots of great ideas in it. I am reading it like a novel, page by page.”

Reader reviews
Beautiful book
I love this book. I have most of her cook books and this one does not repeat her others. It's beautifully done and would make a lovely gift. Lots of great ideas in it — I am reading it like a novel, page by page. It's broken into five sections: Cooking, Entertaining, Home Organizing, Collecting and Gardening. All very interesting.
Great info and photos — a great gift
I saw this in the library and after putting sticky notes on so many pages I decided to buy my own. Great ideas for substituting ingredients, collecting antiques, choosing the proper cookware. I was almost tempted to give it to my daughter but couldn't give away so many hints and secrets. Pleasing photos and a nice text size.
Nostalgic yet enlightening
Martha hits a home run in this back-to-basics guide with a fresh perspective for a new era and a new generation of devotees.
Happy to have on my coffee table
A lovely book inside and out — makes for a lovely coffee table display and fun for guests to thumb through.
Love it
Got this for my mother for her birthday and she loved it. Lots of good information in this book — then again, Martha always has the best info for a wide range of subjects.
Martha is always a good thing
Love all things Martha. If you are already a fan there aren't many new ideas — but if you're new to Martha, it's a must read.
